Harbour Island

Some islands are meant for play, some are meant for sport, and a very select few are meant for total relaxation. There seems to be a certain hush that falls all over Harbour Island – from the moment that you exit the airplane, you will find that this island has an altogether different state of mind.  Leave those business concerns on the airplane if you plan on heading to Harbour Island – this quiet little oasis is simply not the place to think about books, chores, the office, or anything at all. Harbour Island almost encloses the northeast tip of Eleuthera, forming a harbor 6 miles  ( 10 km ) long and 3 miles ( 5 km ) wide.

Harbour Island is home to beaches that stretch on for many miles, but these aren’t just any type of beaches. The sands that surround Harbour Island have been painted a pink hue by Mother Nature herself, and they are the perfect backdrop to swimming, diving, and taking a nap in the warm sun. If you sneak quietly away from the beach, you will find that there are many great golf courses on Harbour Island as well. In fact, some of the resorts on this island are home to some of the world’s top golfing spots, so make sure to book that tee time well in advance.

Harbour Island also claims one of the oldest settlements in the Bahamas, Dunmore Town. At the northern end of the island, the town retains an Old World charm through its many restored,  brightly colored homes, whose carved shutters and verandas outlined in white create a ginger-bread cottage atmosphere. Many colonial houses were built during the latter part of the 19th century; Loyalist Cottage on Bay Street dates from 1790. A pink municipal building adds the finishing touch to this picturesque town.

As if pristine beaches, snorkeling, scuba diving, bonefishing and award winning golf courses weren’t enough, Harbour Island also boasts some of the best restaurants that the Bahamas has to offer.  The Rock House, The Landing, and Ma Ruby’s are just some of the gourmet spots to check out on the island. Of course, once you have stuffed your belly fully of all the things that the island has to offer, you will want to stumble back to your private villa, cottage, or vacation home right away (all types of private accommodation offered on this island). No matter what your perfect vacation entails, there is no better place on earth to truly unwind than on Harbour Island.
