Soggy Dollar

Soggy Dollar

Let’s be honest – there is no shortage of bars within the islands. In fact, many tourists head to the islands just to drink their worries away. Still, there is nothing quite like the Soggy Dollar bar. Upon until a few years ago, the only way to venture towards the Soggy Dollar was to take a dinghy or to swim ashore from your docked boat – this is where the name “Soggy Dollar” came from, since most patrons had to hang their money out to dry before it could be spent.

Today, you can still see dollar bills hanging from a clothesline, though most people get to the Soggy Dollar by way of the ferry that services the island of Jost Van Dyke on a regular basis. The bartender, Mickey, has been working the Soggy Dollar bar for many years now, and he would not trade his job for anything in the world (other than to be a full time cultivator of the mangoes and other fresh fruit that he grows in the back). The bar itself is a simple affair full of basic drinks, lots of board games, and the occasional guitar player that entertains tourists for the sheer love of the music.

Jost Van Dyke used to be a sleepy little island oasis, though the new road has made it possible for more tourists than ever before to get there. Thankfully, the white sand beaches are still left unharmed and the waters are as clear as every before. There are plenty of hammocks dotting the island for those that want to unwind with a drink (Mickey won’t mind if you take yours outside), though this is not a rough and rowdy bar by any stretch of the imagination. If you find yourself in Jost Van Dyke, make sure to visit the Soggy Dollar bar.
